Name: Jean Dias Fróes (Jean Diaz)
Age: 29
Born: Pinheiros, inland Espírito Santo.
Grew up:  I spent most of my childhood in several cities and states, like Espirito Santo, Minas Gerais and Bahia, and since I was young I already had great interest in the comics’ field, mostly super-heroes.
Where do you live now: Now I live in Vitoria, capital of Espirito Santo.
Education: Graduated in Odontology in the Universidade Federal do Espirito Santo, post graduation in Esthetic Odontology.
Hobbies / other interests (besides comics):
The rest of my time is taken up by two rock bands, Take me and Antemic, (where I unleash all my anger against the editor, deadlines and extraterrestrial artists such as Brian Hitch or Adam Huges, who come to our planet to make fun of us), and also by some soccer matches.
Art Education:
Course of Comics from Impacto and books related to the area.
When and how did you become interested in comics:
My interest in comics came from since when I began to understand what happened when you put a drawing next to another in sequence. When I saw a fantastic world materializing in a sheet of paper. That must have been when I was 6 or 7. My first reading that shocked me was a Phantom story, where he faced an immortal Roman Centurion. I remember it just like it happened today. That frightened me and at the same time charmed me , and since then I never stopped reading heroes comic books.
When and how did you decide to dedicate yourself professionally to comics:
When I realized that I was happier when a patient missed an appointment in my practice and I could stay home drawing, instead of being locked up in my practice researching which resin would have a higher resistance polymer rate and with a better marginal sealing. Then I went to Sao Paulo and the guys at Impacto lied to me saying that my drawings were nice. I believed them, and started taking the course, and then some American editors also believed that and I got my first work.
Talk about your family and their opinion on comics and on your work:
In my family there was never an artist, and then I came, singing, playing and drawing. After some fights and a DNA test, they believed that I was really part of the family, and that there was no way of stopping me. I shed some tears for wasting 4 and half years with Odontology and all was good. Now they support me and cheer for my success.
Influences / idols:
As incredible as it may seem, a guy named Phil Jimenez, saw one of my drawings once, and when I asked if I should try being a lawyer, he said no, there was talent that only needed to be polished. The guys at Impacto (Klebs, Manny and a former teacher there, Fabio Laguna), have always supported me as well. In comics, without a doubt the one that influences me the most nowadays is Brian Hitch, I love his work, even though I know that the type of art he does and the 30 day deadline don’t mix very well. But besides him, some guys like Kevin Nowlan, Alan Davis, Adam Huges, Joe Quesada, Mignola, Alex Raymond, and Travis Charest also have a par in what I do. So many influences sometimes make it hard to create a single style, so I do what I believe gives consistency to the pages.
Material / techniques currently using:
Depends... I do pinups one way and pages in a different way. For pages, because of the deadline, I do my sketches on the computer (for pinups I do several layout tests on pencil), then I look for references on the internet or from pictures I take myself. I print it all on A3 and draw on a light table, with mechanical pencils and HB or B leads. Then I ink in a traditional way, with disposable china ink pens, rulers, French curves, and brushes (Winsor&Newton series 7, size 3), with Talens china ink.

Future plans: establish myself in the comics industry and live off my drawings.

Your motto: Better have two wasps flying than one in your hand.
Tips for the beginners: Well, then it’s from one beginner to another: drawing comics is one of the hardest art forms there is, and also one of the most charming ones. If you really want to, you got to have discipline, a strong will and a great sense of critic. Listen to the critics, specially the cruelest ones, because those are the ones that will make you grow the most, and remember: one day you go by without drawing is like a night without sleeping, there’s no way to make up for it.
Message to the fans: If you are my fan, you probably dont know anything about comics.
